Purpose
This policy establishes the annual Student Remembrance Ceremony, designed to honor and remember Southern Illinois University Carbondale students who have passed away. This ceremony offers a formal opportunity for the University community to commemorate the lives of deceased students, faculty and staff and extend support to their families.
Scope
This policy applies to all students enrolled at the time of their passing and their families, as well as the broader University community, including faculty and staff who were employed at the time of their passing.
Policy
- Ceremony Format and Components
The Student Remembrance Ceremony shall occur annually on a specified date in April. Components of the ceremony include:- Remarks by the Chancellor and Provost
- A poem or written piece read by a student or faculty member
- Reading the names of remembered students, faculty and staff.
- Presentation of a memorial item to the families
- Moment of silence
- Participation and Invitations
- The ceremony is open to all students, faculty, staff, and members of the community.
- Families of deceased students, faculty and staff are to receive personal invitations.
- The ceremony is to be planned by a permanent committee including representatives from Student Affairs, the Office of the Chancellor – Events and Outreach, Center for International Education, Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC), Undergraduate Student Government (USG), the Graduate School, Registrar’s Office, Human Resources and Academic representative.
