The probationary period is part of the examination process and is used to determine whether an employee demonstrates the ability and qualifications necessary for satisfactory performance. An employee who has unsatisfactory work performance will be dismissed during probation and will be given the reason for dismissal although the reason will not be reviewable.
Status employees who are promoted or who change classifications begin a new probation. If dismissed during the new probation, retreat rights may be used. (See Civil Service Statute and Rules250.90.) Most employees in a status appointment serve a 6-month probationary period. A few classifications require a 12-month probation. The length of probation is not dependent upon the percentage of appointment.
