Civil service employees in status appointments are subject to the seniority provisions of the State Universities Civil Service System of Illinois, Statute and Rules. Normally, seniority will affect an employee only in the event of a layoff in the classification or promotional line. However, employees covered by collective bargaining agreements may have other conditions of their employment affected by their seniority. (See Civil Service Statute and Rules250.120.)
Service and seniority are computed in compliance with the current rules published by the State Universities Civil Service System of Illinois. (Service is the term used to describe time worked in a class by a status appointee who is serving, but has not completed, a probationary period in that class. Seniority is the term used to describe time worked in a class or in classes within the same promotional line after completion of the probationary period.) Questions about an individual's service and seniority and about established seniority lists should be directed to Employee Records through the employee's department.
